Dreamgirls at Goodspeed Opera House

Why see Dreamgirls?

and I am telling you, you're gonna love it

First debuting on Broadway in 1981, Dreamgirls has since become an iconic modern classic. Loosely based on the story of The Supremes, follow the triumph and torment of show business as the trio rises from backup singers to the toast of the town. Featuring showstopping Motown-inspired numbers including "Steppin' to the Bad Side" "Cadillac Car" and "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going", Dreamgirls is the ultimate showbiz musical, with glamour, glitz, love, and drama intact!

What is the story?

Hopeful singing talents Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson, and Effie White are performing as The Dreamettes when ambitious agent Curtis Taylor, Jr. discovers them. Landing them a job as backup singers for the soul and rock 'n' roll sensation James 'Thunder' Early, he smartly begins to mold their rising career. However Deena and Effie come to blows when the former is lauded as the group's star for her beauty, rather than the full-figured and vocally more talented Effie, and the dream threatens to unravel as fast as it began.

Good

Enjoyed the show and not disappointed. Of course Efie was wonderful. Some fun comic elements. The sets were a little lackluster. Sometimes hard to understand lyrics. But overall really enjoyed. ... Read more

Dreamy Show....just not dreamy sound production!

Ever since seeing the original Broadway cast version with Jennifer Holiday playing Effie I have been a devoted fan of the show and it's score. But yesterday's performance left us wishing the sound had matched the level of the talent on the stage. It was often muffled and left several of us leaning in to hear the talent. Several in our group were disappointed with "When I Am Telling You" as the sound director just didn't give her enough mic. She's got a great voice but it needed more power in the amplification. That much was obvious when Effie was collapsing into Curtis's arms when she had the benefit of both her mic and his! Too bad. The song was great but could have been much greater with the right sound level The actor who played James Thunder Early was beyond amazing! His vocal range and vocalization coupled with his lightening fast dance was dazzling and garnered the most audience reaction...literally. Hope to see more of him. All in all a great show and well worth seeing. ... Read more
