MEDIOCRE AT BEST; LACKLUSTER PERFORMANCES; JUICY PHANTOM

Having seen this show several times in multiple places, I was deeply disappointed and would have to consider this mediocre at best. The cast, while passable if one were performing locally, failed to bring the romantic flair and melancholy that is associated with the Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom, while his voice was nice, had a severe saliva issue that would cause constant projected sprays throughout the show. In fact, moments where the Phantom leaned down during scenes, small globs of spit would drop to the floor or set beneath. This, for me, proved very distracting and scenes between he and Christine seemed to play out with this issue in mind, thus removing any sense of chemistry throughout the sets. The show felt disjointed, Rauol seemed more a schoolboy learning his parts for a highschool play, and many of the other of the cast made you feel like you were at Disneyworld watching an outdoor rendition of Beauty and the Beast while munching on popcorn. Disappointed!

PROBS, BUT FABULOUS PHANTOM

The Deseret News hit the nail on the head: the two standout performances were by Quentin Oliver Lee and the stage set. That said, other great performances were given by Carlotta (who actually was the understudy), Raoul, Firmin and Andre. I hate to say this, but I was very disappointed by Christine (Eva Tavares)--she sang very nasally, but her acting was quite good. The ensemble was spot on, giving the audience everything they could ask for, except for having to sing shortened versions of iconic songs as well as use different lyrics (very disconcerting for those of us who know the originals by heart ). I wanted to take my granddaughters, as they love the show as much as I do, and next time I will. I was in the disabled section, which I'm pleased to say was as good a seat as I could have hoped for, and the staff of the Eccles could not have been nicer.

GREAT CAST, TERRIBLE SETTING.

The performers did a marvelous job. Unfortunately the venue was not up to the task of hosting it. The sound system was terrible and made the majority of the productions vocal work unintelligible. While the music of the production was distinct and recognizable, the words being spoken were simultaneously stifled by the terrible sound system and drowned out by a too loud orchestra. All in all this production was great but drug down by the sub-par venue it was hosted at.

MISSING NEARLY ALL EMOTION OF THE ORIGINAL

While the show was enjoyable as I have seen it many time, the performances from nearly the entire cast was average at best. Orchestra was phenomenal it drowned out all vocals and the high powered songs that should have large loud vocal crescendos was just not there. The phantom was not convincing as a dark soul and seemed more like a high schoolers rendition of the part. Boat scene and masquerade scene were very disappointing in their new versions - gone is the shear awe one has seeing this show - first timers likely to enjoy but are certainly missing out on tons of more raw emotion and one hundred times better singing from other performances - if you have seen the show you should pass

IT WAS BETTER IN TORONTO

Sloppy performance on St. Patrick's Day in NYC - technical problems with some mics, stage hands visible at times, and a Phantom who was not at the top of his game...what we saw recently in Toronto was head and shoulders above this. Still, its a show worth seeing just for the spectacle of it all.

GREAT PERFORMANCES MUTED BY DISAPPOINTING SOUND SYSTEM

Wonderful set and performances, but the lyrics were often indisguishable from the powerful music. The audio engineer should increase the volume of the center channel so the voices could prevail.

NOT UP TO PAR

Have seen the Phantom every year it comes to Pittsburgh. I was so excited to see this years Phantom for the fact it was the 25th anniversary so I was expecting spectacular, well it was disappointing. The props not up to par, the Mascaraed scene and costumes not as fun or colorful like the past , Phantom okay, Christine's voice amazing. Orchestra (music) is always fantastic. The past years you could feel the music in your chest and you would be mesmerized by scenes and actors, you would be pulled in(feeling the emotions of the actors) and feel like you were up on that stage with them. This year we felt like the whole production was so rushed thru and seemed like it was missing a lot of details, especially emotion (did not have a chance to connect to their emotions). We felt like the ending came abruptly and we were left with an emptiness. Past years I have felt so bad for the Phantom, this year I honestly was irritated and bored. Hopefully next production will be as good as past.
